Galileo is looking for outstanding leaders to help found and/or run summer camps in the Bay Area next summer.

Two of our summer camp programs, Galileo Summer Quest (http://www.galileosummerquest.com), for entering 5-8th grade students, and Camp Galileo (http://www.campgalileo.com), for entering K-5th grade students, are both seeking several new Camp Directors for 2009.

Camp Galileo

Voted "Best Camp for Kids" in Bay Area Parent and the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Camp Galileo is an art, science and outdoors summer day camp serving kids in Pre-K through 5th grades. Founded in 2002, Camp Galileo encourages kids to discover and pursue their passions through imagining new ideas, collaborating with peers and expressing themselves creatively. Our campers enjoy art, science and outdoors programming - and fun camp traditions - every day. Our hands-on curriculum is developed in partnership with The Tech Museum of Innovation, de Young Museum and Klutz and is delivered by highly enthusiastic staff. Thousands of children will be served during summer 2009 at more than 20 Bay Area Camp Galileo campuses.

Galileo Summer Quest

Galileo Summer Quest is a unique new summer program for middle schoolers, where students delve deeply into collaborative projects inspired by their passions. Campers choose from a selection of enticing Majors, such as Magazine Makers, Go-Karts, Lego Robotics and Video Game Design. They also hone their teamwork and leadership skills, while creating strong connections with peers who share their interests.

The Camp Director Role

In addition to directly impacting kids, Galileo strives to improve the quality of educational institutions through increasing the effectiveness of current educators and inspiring future ones, and developing the capacities of educational leaders. The centerpiece of this effort is Galileo’s LEAD Program, designed to provide our Directors with resources, training and experiences that help them become better managers and stronger educational leaders. Specific elements of the program include weekend training retreats, weekly individual coaching throughout the camp season (Jan-August), and mentorship by an experienced (2nd-3rd year) member of the program.

Each Camp Director assumes overall leadership of the program at their assigned location, including staff selection and management and day-to-day operations. Directors will participate in a weekend kick-off retreat in January, spend approximately 8 hours per week preparing for camp between February and June, and then work full-time for 6-9 (this is different than what we say above…5-8 weeks…let’s decide on what it is) weeks during the summer. A first year Camp Director earns $10,000 to $13,000, while 2nd and 3rd year Camp Directors have the potential to earn over $15-20,000. Most Camp Directors are school-year educators or graduate students who combine their Galileo and school-year responsibilities.

Camp Directors wear many hats during the camp season. Camp Directors provide leadership and instructional supervision for staff (many of whom are professional educators), interact daily with parents and community members, and are truly the face and spirit of Camp Galileo in the communities we serve. They help create the camp atmosphere for our campers and staff by leading skits and songs during opening and closing ceremonies (wearing costumes, too!), cultivating creativity at their camp and orchestrating all-camp games and activities.

Successful candidates will share the following attributes: college graduate; several years of experience working with children; demonstrated leadership and management ability; school year employment to complement this work; summers off. Camp experience is a plus.
